Koh Chang Island

Welcome to your ultimate Koh Chang Island Guide updated for 2025!

Why Visit Koh Chang?

Koh Chang Island is aptly translated to “Elephant Island” in Thai on account of the Islands unique elephant shape from above.
It is Thailand’s third largest island after Phuket and Koh Samui, yet, is overlooked or totally off the radar of most tourists when they think of worthwhile islands to visit in Thailand. Unlike its’ busier, more commercialized big sister islands, Koh Chang still retains its authentic Thai cultural heritage, and boasts a stunningly diverse landscape of untouched pristine beaches, spectacular waterfalls, misty mountains, and peaceful mangrove forests.

Fun fact: About 70% of Koh Chang is covered by protected national park land, making it a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers alike. The island’s unique blend of laid-back beach resorts, traditional fishing villages and natural wonders means you get a diverse and authentic island experience, without the crowds.

If you’re planning your next island escape, I highly recommend choosing Koh Chang over the busier Phuket or Koh Samui. It’s a refreshing change that offers a true taste of Thailand’s natural beauty and local charm, without the crowds. Ready to explore? Keep reading this Koh Chang Island Guide to find out how to plan the perfect itinerary!

When is the Best Time to Visit Koh Chang Island?

The best time to visit Koh Chang Island is during Thailand’s “winter” season which are the cool and dry months from November to February. I say “winter” with air quotes because temperatures still hover between 27°C and 30°C, but it’s the most pleasant time of year with clear skies, calm seas, and stunning sunsets over the island’s many beaches.

Koh Chang Island Seasons

  • Summer: March to April
  • Rainy: May to Oct
  • “Winter”: Nov to Feb

This Koh Chang Island guide will include activities suited for all seasons, so that said, don’t let the season stop you from enjoying this paradise. I visited in early May, right at the beginning of the rainy season, and still had an amazing time. In fact, the smaller crowds and lush, green landscapes made it feel even more special.

Pro tip: Try to avoid travelling during Thai public holidays (Thailand has a surprising number—16 per year!). During these times, Koh Chang becomes a hotspot for locals looking for a quick island getaway. We witnessed insane queues for the ferry, including a multi-kilometre vehicle lineup on a Sunday after a long weekend. Combine that with notoriously bad Thai traffic, and your relaxing island vacation is bound to start on the wrong foot. Check the calendar and plan accordingly for a seamless travel experience.

How Long to Spend in Koh Chang Island?

This Koh Chang Island guide includes enough activities to easily fill a week or more. But if you’re planning to fully embrace resort life and aren’t fussed about waterfalls, kayaking, or island hopping, you can absolutely enjoy a relaxing getaway in just 3 days. However, I do think any less than 3 days would be a waste or a shame, given the effort you’ve put into travelling all the way here.

In my opinion, 4 to 6 days is the ideal amount of time to spend in Koh Chang. It gives you enough time to explore the island’s highlights, while still leaving room for relaxation activities like chilling by the beach between the exciting activities listed in this guide.

How to Get to Koh Chang Island

There’s no road access to Koh Chang Island, so all visitors must arrive by ferry from the mainland. Luckily, it’s a (fairly) smooth journey from Bangkok depending on the many options available.

Ferry to Koh Chang Island (2025 Update)

If you’re looking for an in depth guide on how to take the ferry to Koh Chang, especially with a car, read my full guide here!

The Ferry to Koh Chang: Everything You Need to Know

As of 2025, you can only reach the island via Koh Chang Ferry from Ao Thammachat Pier (sometimes just called Thammachat Pier), which connects to Ao Sapparot Pier on Koh Chang Island. The ferry ride takes around 30 to 45 minutes, and while there is no strict timetable, it runs frequently – similar to a shuttle service – every 30 to 60 minutes from 6:30am to 6:30pm, 7 days a week, including Thai holidays and even Christmas Day.

💡 2025 Update: You may come across references to Trat Ferry (formerly Centrepoint Ferry), but their services have been suspended since July 2024 and are unlikely to resume.

How to Get to the Ferry Pier from Bangkok

There are a few ways to reach Ao Thammachat Pier from Bangkok, depending on your time, budget, and travel style:

✈️ Plane + Private Transfer (Fastest + Easiest)

  • Fly from Bangkok to Trat Airport – Flight time: 40 to 60 minutes
  • Then, book a private transfer or minivan from Trat Airport to your hotel on Koh Chang (including the ferry ticket).
    • Prices: Around 550 Baht one-way, or 990 Baht return
    • Important: Book ahead! Taxis hailed at the airport usually won’t take passengers across the ferry due to the time involved.

🚌 Bus from Bangkok (Budget Option)

  • Direct buses to the ferry terminal take around 5 to 6 hours
  • You can book combo tickets that include the bus + ferry from trusted providers
  • More details here – scroll to the section regarding the relevant bus routes

🚗 Self-Drive or Private Transfer (Flexible & Great for Groups)

  • The drive from Bangkok to Koh Chang takes about 5 hours, plus 60 to 90 minutes for the ferry and transfer to your hotel once on the island.
  • Consider stopping for food and coffee breaks along the way at Ban Bung, Klaeng, Chanthaburi or Laem Ngop
  • Private transfers are the most convenient option for families, groups or elderly travellers.
    • Prices start at around 4,000 Baht, depending on the number of passengers.

How to Get Around Koh Chang Island

This Koh Chang Island guide is easiest to follow if you have your own transport, whether that be a car or motorbike.

Most of Koh Chang Island’s hotels and resorts are located along the west coast, so once you arrive at Ao Sapparot Pier and hop off the ferry, you’ll head right on the main road to which passes hotspots like White Sand Beach, Kai Bae Beach, Klong Prao, and Lonely Beach.

🚘 Driving around Koh Chang: What to Expect

We used Google Maps to navigate across the island with no issues. Simply plug in your hotel name and followed the directions straight to KC Grande Resort.

Be prepared: Koh Chang’s roads can be steep, winding, and narrow in certain sections. This is especially the case once you get past Kai Bae Beach or venture over to the quieter east coast. Driving at night isn’t for the faint-hearted due to poor lighting, sharp turns and errant tourist on a moped with no lights.

If you’re hiring a car or bike, stick to daytime driving if possible, and take it slow on the hills.

✅ Checklist item: If you’re not a Thai national, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country’s license to legally drive in Thailand.

🛵 Motorbike Hire

For the more adventurous, renting a motorbike is a fun and flexible way to explore the island. It’s perfect for zipping through narrow roads and finding parking easily. Just keep in mind:

  • You’ll be exposed to the intense tropical heat, and sudden rainstorms (from May to Oct)
  • Helmets are a must (even if you see locals skipping them)
  • Only rent a bike if you’re confident riding in tricky conditions

🚕 Taxis & Transfers

If you’re planning to relax at your resort for most of your trip, you might not need your own transport at all. Most hotels can organise taxis, shuttles, or day trips with local tour companies to take you where you want to go.

What We Did

We were lucky as my family lives nearby and generously lent us their car, which we drove directly onto the ferry and around the island. It was by far the most comfortable and convenient way to get around, especially with luggage.

Where to Stay in Koh Chang Island?

When it comes to where to stay in Koh Chang, there’s something for every budget and travel style. Whether you’re looking for a luxury escape, a family friendly beachfront resort, or a backpacker-friendly hostel, Koh Chang Island has you covered.

Most of the island’s more popular accommodation options are located along the west coast, from White Sand Beach to Kai Bae. which is the most developed and accessible area on the island.

💰 My Top Picks based on Budget and vibe ~

  • $$$ – The Retreat
    • Perfect for a romantic couple’s getaway, this adults-only luxury resort is ideal if you’re after a more exclusive and premium experience
  • $$ – KC Grande Resort
    • Our personal favourite and the best all-rounder in terms of location, comfort, and value. It’s great for couples and families alike, and located on the gorgeous White Sand Beach.
  • $$ – SYLVAN Koh Chang
    • Tucked away in a quieter corner near Bailan Bay, this stylish resort is surrounded by lush, mountainous greenery with great access to Kai Bae Beach also
  • $$ – The Chill Resort & Spa
    • A beautifully designed boutique resort in Kai Bae Beach, known for its relaxing vibe and great service without feeling too formal
  • $ – Lonely Beach Guesthouses and Hostels

What to Do in Koh Chang

No matter what type of traveller you are, Koh Chang Island offers an incredible variety of activities and experiences. From relaxing on the island’s best beaches and discovering hidden local seafood restaurants, to taking in the sunset at the Island’s best viewpoints – there’s something here for everyone.

For the more adventurous, this Koh Chang Island guide also includes unique experiences like discovering magical mangrove forests or kayaking and snorkelling out to uninhabited islands. Whether you’re a beach lover, foodie, or adventure seeker, this activity guide has you covered with the best things to do in Koh Chang.

1. Best Beaches in Koh Chang + Relaxation Experiences

One of the best things to do in Koh Chang is, of course, beach-hopping. The island’s west coast is home to a variety of stunning beaches, each offering something a little different depending on your vibe.

🏖️ White Sand Beach

This was my personal favourite beach. Although I may be a little biased as our hotel KC Grande was located here, this long stretch of uninterrupted soft white sand is one of the best beaches in Koh Chang, which is why you’ll find the it lined with luxury resorts, beach bars, and plenty of food options. It’s the most developed beach on the island and the probably the most busy due to its popularity, so coming in the early morning is the best time to have the beach (somewhat) to yourself.

🌴 Lonely Beach

If you’re after something more relaxed, Lonely Beach is a great option. It’s less commercial and has a more chilled-out backpacker feel, but despite the name, is quite busy. The coarser sand and rockier shoreline give Lonely Beach a more rustic feel compared to the pristine White Sand Beach. We recommend visiting during low tide when there’s more space to lay out your towel and relax.

🌅 Klong Prao Beach

Another beautiful and peaceful beach, Klong Prao Beach offers long stretches of sand perfect for sunset walks, swimming, or just lazing under the palm trees. It’s not as built up as other beaches but has a good mix of mid-range resorts and food options.

Get a Beach Massage

Take relaxation to the next level with a traditional Thai massage right on the beach. You’ll find massage stations dotted along most of Koh Chang’s west coast beaches listed above. Let the sound of the waves lull you into a meditative state while getting a rejuvenating massage for as little as 300 baht per hour. Prices may be a little higher at resorts, but the experience is well worth it in my opinion.

Dinner with a Fire Dancing Show 🔥

Light up your evening by watching an entrancing fire dancing show. These nightly performances light up the beach after sunset, especially around White Sand Beach and Lonely Beach. Local performers spin and twirl fire which contrast dramatically under the night sky while you enjoy your beachside dinner.
Tip: It’s polite to leave a tip at the end of the show to show appreciation for the performers’ incredible skill and effort.

2. Khlong Phlu Waterfall – A Jungle Oasis in Koh Chang Island

Tucked away inside the lush Mu Ko Chang National Park, Khlong Phlu Waterfall is one of the top natural attractions in this Koh Chang Island guide. This impressive three-tiered waterfall offers a refreshing escape into the jungle, just a short trek from the main road.

After a scenic 600m walk through shaded tropical forest, you’ll reach a dramatic cascade flowing into a crystal-clear plunge pool. Wade through the cool water as fish dart around you for perfect reprieve from the humid hike. Whether you’re a nature lover or just need a break from the beach, this is one of the best things to do in Koh Chang.

👉 Planning a visit? I’ve written a detailed guide with everything you need to know – including opening hours, entrance fees, how to get there, and what to bring in my Complete Guide to Khlong Phlu Waterfall here!

3. Salak Phet Mangrove Walk – A Peaceful Nature Boardwalk in Koh Chang Island

Located on the more remote south-eastern coast of Koh Chang Island, the Salak Phet Mangrove Forest offers a raw and untouched glimpse into the island’s diverse ecosystem. A 520-meter aged rust-red boardwalk winds its way through dense mangroves, teeming with crabs, birds, and native plants.

The trail feels like a step into a forgotten part of the island. While the wooden walkway has undergone refurbishments over the years, parts of it are now broken, uneven, or missing entirely making for a slightly sketchy (possibly hazardous) wander.

Despite its sketchy condition, this spot is well worth a quick visit, especially if you’re already exploring Koh Chang’s east coast. The walk takes less than an hour and ends at a tranquil viewpoint overlooking Salakphet Bay, where the dense mangrove forest opens up to ocean views.

Safety tip: Wear suitable shoes, and keep an eye out for rogue nails or broken boards!

There’s an abandoned office and toilet block near the entrance, and if you’re parking, expect to pay a small fee to a local woman who sits casually out front. The entry to the Salak Phet Mangrove Walk is free.

Parking fees:

  • 🛵 Motorbike – 10 Baht
  • 🚗 Car – 20 Baht
  • 🚐 Van/Bus – 25 Baht

4. The Best Food in Koh Chang Island

Thai cuisine is incredibly diverse and delicious, and personally, it’s my favorite in all of Asia (thanks to my Thai mother who is an excellent chef). The best part? You don’t need to splurge to eat well here. That said, paying a little more for meals at more established spots can help lower your risk of food poisoning – so take every recommendation with that little disclaimer in mind!

Here are some of my top food picks in Koh Chang

🐟 Salak Khok Fisherman Village

Authentic Thai Seafood restaurant off-the-beaten-track

A true gem for those seeking an authentic Thai seafood experience in a peaceful location where no other tourists really find. This quiet fisherman village has a handful of small Thai restaurants which are built on stilt like structures in open-air balcony-style setups overlooking the water. We ate at Tidlom Seafood Restaurant, and I can’t recommend it enough for the amazing food, warm hospitality and incredible views over the pier, where traditional Thai fishing boats glide past lush mangroves stretching into the sea.

Protip: Get lunch here on your way to Salak Phet Mangrove Forest as they’re close to each other!

🌅 KC Beach Restaurant

Something for everyone with beachfront vibes

KC Beach Restaurant is the casual dining option at the KC Grande, offers surprisingly good Thai and European cuisine which caters to everyone’s palette, on the White Sand Beach. It’s a perfect spot for sunset dining with live fire shows and night market adding to the holiday atmosphere.

🌇 The Ocean Terrace – The Retreat

Romantic sunset dining perfect for Special Occasions

For a more upscale experience, head to The Retreat’s restaurant, The Ocean Terrace, for fine dining with panoramic sunset views. Ideal for couples celebrating something special.

☕️ Sylvie Café

Sylvie Café, part of Sylvan Resort, is newly opened beautifully decorated cafe featuring breathtaking treetop views over the ocean and nearby islands. Perfect for an iced coffee stop or brunch with a view.

Best Food Areas in Koh Chang

  • Kai Bae Area: Best for authentic Thai street food, casual cafés, and budget-friendly eats. This area has a great balance of local flavor and convenience, with nearby pharmacies, bars, and minimarts.
  • White Sand Beach: While this area also has good amount of restaurants and bar options, many of the better restaurants are within beach-facing resorts, making the street-side vibe a little less vibrant compared to the Kai Bae area.
  • Lonely Beach

5. Kayaking Around Koh Chang Island

Kayaking is one of the best ways to enjoy the stunning coastline of Koh Chang Island and take in the island’s lush jungle views from the ocean. Many hotels offer free kayak rentals for guests. We stayed at KC Grande and were thrilled to find complimentary kayaks and stand-up paddle boards available!

🛶 The Best place to Kayak – Ko Man Nai – the mini island

If your hotel doesn’t offer kayaks or you want to paddle with a purpose, head to Sylvan Resort, and take their funicular down to Kai Bae Beach. You can rent a kayak directly from Sunset Beach Restaurant for around 300 baht per hour (life vests included) without needing to be a hotel guest.

From here, you can paddle to Ko Man Nai, a tiny uninhabited island just a few hundred meters offshore. During low tide, it’s even possible to walk or swim there (wear reef shoes to protect your feet from sharp coral or rocks). The island is undeveloped but has a beautiful sandy beach and shaded areas where you can spot hermit crabs scuttling around. An hour is the perfect amount of time kayak and explore this mini island and wander its shoreline.

☀️ Protip: Don’t Underestimate the Sun! Learn from my mistake and wear a hat, a light, sweat-wicking shirt, and apply sunscreen generously. Even under the overcast sky, the tropical sun is intense and gave me the most brutal sunburn even though I was kayaking for less than an hour. 🙁

6. Kai Bae Viewpoint – Koh Chang’s Best Panorama

If you’re looking for one of the best panoramic views on Koh Chang Island, don’t miss Kai Bae Viewpoint. Perched on a clifftop along the west coast, this lookout offers an unmatched perspective of the sparkling blue ocean and nearby islands, including Ko Yuak, Ko Man Nai, and Ko Man Nok.

It’s a quick (likely 20 minute) stop but worth it, especially if you’re passing through during golden hour. There’s even a small onsite café called Viewcafe Kohchang, perfect for grabbing a cold drink while soaking in the scenery. With a bit of luck, you might even spot monkeys in the surrounding forest below.

  • ✅ Free to enter
  • 🚗 Parking available for cars and motorbikes (but fills up fast during peak season!)

7. Join a Hands-On Thai Cooking Classes on Koh Chang

Taking a cooking class on Koh Chang is a fun and tasty way to learn your favorite traditional Thai recipes and meet fellow travelers. Both Koh Chang Thai Cooking School by Nam and Napalai Thai Cuisine School offers a range of morning, afternoon and evening sessions tailored for all skill levels. You’ll get hands-on experience preparing authentic Thai dishes using fresh local ingredients, taught by the experts.

8. Snorkeling Boat Trips from Koh Chang Island

One of the top things to do in Koh Chang is taking a snorkeling boat trip to nearby islands. Whether you’re a first-time snorkeler or an experienced scuba diver, there are plenty of options available to suit your skill level.

While the coral reefs around Koh Chang may not be as pristine as the Great Barrier Reef, they still offer a memorable underwater experience full of marine life and tropical fish.

You can easily book snorkeling tours through your hotel, which often connects you with trusted local operators and arranges transport to the boat. Alternatively, many tour booths around the island offer a variety of snorkeling and diving trips — just be sure to compare options and prices before you commit.

9. Experience the Outdoor Night Markets in Koh Chang

While smaller and more low-key than Bangkok’s frenetic night markets, Koh Chang’s night markets still deliver that authentic vibe. Expect to find a mix of quirky street food, unique snacks, and a variety of accessories and clothes. We visited the Koh Chang Monthly Market, but there are plenty of markets scattered around the island’s main hubs and beach areas to explore.

Closing Thoughts on Koh Chang Island

I hope this guide has helped you plan your trip and given you all the inspiration and practical tips you need to explore the best of what this beautiful island has to offer. I genuinely love Koh Chang and believe it has something special for every type of traveller. It’s still relatively under-the-radar compared to other Islands in Thailand and Asia generally, which is most definitely part of its charm. So if you’re looking for a tropical island experience that’s more laid-back and authentic, now’s the perfect time to visit before the rest of the world catches on! Safe travels Xx
